Each May, Caffe Lena celebrates its anniversary with a big, special concert at Skidmore College’s Zankel Music Center in Saratoga Springs. Usually the concert features musicians who outgrew the tiny Caffe decades ago. But don’t get the idea that Lena’s legacy is all about the past.
To celebrate their 56th anniversary – and with a nod to the future and the major renovations taking place at the Caffe this summer – Caffe director Sarah Craig decided that the anniversary concert should feature some of the brightest shining stars on the contemporary folk horizon.
Among the performers at last month’s big bash were homegrown Troy troubadour Sean Rowe with his hometown band (Eric Margan on upright bass; Chris Carey on drums; and Cara Gorman and Mira Stanley on backing vocals), harmony-laden southern mountain balladeers Anna & Elizabeth (who accompanied their performance with hand-cranked, vintage projection visuals) and the wily Suitcase Junket (a rootsy, 21st century one-man band with more contraptions in his trickbag than Inspector Gadget).
