LIVE: The Howard Fishman Quartet @ Universal Preservation Hall, 8/19/16

Review and photographs by Rudy Lu
You never quite know what to expect when Howard Fishman appears in concert. His performance last month at the Universal Preservation Hall in Saratoga Springs featured a quartet consisting of Andrae Murchison trombone, Nathan Peck on bass and Charles Burnham on fiddle, in addition to Fishman on guitar.
The band performed in a circle for greater audience intimacy, playing a mixture of gospel-influenced tunes, as well as old jazz standards from the ’20s and ’30s, with the bandmembers frequently changing positions so that the audience could see them all perform. The varying backgrounds of each of them led to a most interesting and soulful performance.
