LIVE: Cameron Brown’s OC DC @ The Falcon, 9/4/16

Review and photographs by Rudy Lu
OC DC. These initials are short hand for avant garde jazz pioneers Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry, who loomed large in the illustrious career of veteran bassist Cameron Brown. So it’s no surprise that their compositions have become the foundation for Brown’s latest project, a piano-less quartet dedicated to this liberating music.
Last month at The Falcon in Marlboro, Cameron led the virtuoso band – also featuring Jane Ira Bloom (soprano saxophone), Dave Ballou (trumpet) and Anthony Pisciotti (drums – through an evening of compositions by these jazz giants. The work was performed with the sincerity, intensity and sense of adventure of the original recordings.
Among the compositions played were Coleman’s “Humpty Dumpty” and Cherry’s “Art Deco” and “Peace.”
The usually relatively inaccessible music was made quite enjoyable to the listening audience, and hopefully the audience will be greatly expanded by recording this band’s music.
