Things were a little crazy…
This year’s Albany Riverfront Jazz Festival got renamed the Albany Jazz Festival when it was moved to Washington Park from its Jennings Landing home due to construction in Corning Preserve. But then due to the threat of bad weather, it was moved again – this time back down to the riverside at the dreaded Corning Preserve Boat Launch parking lot.
Then the day before the fest, headliner Ellis Marsalis bowed out of the line-up due to illness. Fortunately, the festival organizers managed to snag an impressive last-minute substitute – Grammy Award-winning New Orleans trumpeter Nicholas Payton.
Unfortunately, Payton didn’t play much trumpet during his headlining set, preferring to focus on his piano playing.
Yeah, things got a little crazy, but it was still a day of great music with nouveau brass band Lucky Chops, urban folk ‘n’ jazz artist K.J. Denhert and Greater Nippertown faves the Jazz Caravan and Cliff Brucker & Full Circle rounding out the bill.
