LIVE: Hot Tuna @ The Egg, 11/20/16
Review and photographs by Rudy Lu
Hot Tuna – a band that began as a side project for guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and bassist Jack Casady of the Jefferson Airplane has continued to be vibrant and relevant, long after the Airplane transformed into the Starship and crash-landed in the pop wasteland.
The electric, power trio version of Hot Tuna played two solid sets of their brand of blues-drenched, roots/jam-band rock and roll before a full house in The Egg’s Hart Theatre earlier this month.
Jorma Kaukonen, a very young 75, displayed that virtuosity on guitar that originally made the Airplane fly so high. His musical partner of over 50 years, 72-year-young Jack Casady on bass interwove the beat almost telepathically.
Meanwhile, drummer-producer Justin Guip (Levon Helm Band and studios) provided the back beat for the band.
“Rock Me Baby,” “Good Shepherd,” “Bowlegged Woman, Knock Kneed Man” and other favorites were played with ease and finesse – some of them with quite different arrangements than on the original recordings.
All in all, a fine evening of music.
On a personal note, this was my first time seeing this band after being a fan for more than 45 years. I hope I will see the acoustic version one of these days…
