Four-time Juno Award winner, two-time Grammy nominee and Officer of the Order of Canada, soprano saxophonist/flautist Jane Bunnett and her band Maqueque played in front of a full house earlier this month at the Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy.

In support of their new album Oddara, the all-female Afro-Cuban jazz band played rumbas, charangas and Santeria-influenced rhythms, in addition to surprisingly covering a pair of classic American ballads – Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine and Leon Russell’s “Song for You.”

The audience was dancing in their seats for most of the performance, but finally they were brought to their feet, filling the available space around the venue with plenty of fancy footwork.

A fun evening for all…
