MUSIC: Anais Mitchell @ Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs. Simply a super singer-songwriter, as she proved with her folk opera, “Hadestown.” 7pm. $32.

TALK: Sonia Sotomayor @ UAlbany’s SEFCU Arena, Albany. The University at Albany Speaker Series presents the first Latina Supreme Court Justice in U.S. history. She is also the author of “My Beloved World,” a memoir that recounts her life’s journey from a Bronx housing project to the federal bench. 6:30pm. FREE.

FILM: “1984” @ various locations. More than 140 venues nationwide will be screening Michael Redford’s 1984 film based on George Orwell’s classic novel to coincide with the date that Winston Smith begins to rebel against his oppressive government by keeping a forbidden diary. Screenings at Skidmore College’s Tang Museum in Saratoga Springs (6:30pm, FREE); Opalka Gallery in Albany (6pm, FREE); and Proctors’ GE Theatre in Schenectady (4:30 & 7pm, $5).

THEATER: “The Sound of Music” @ Proctors, Schenectady. It’s opening night! “The hills are alive…” 7:30pm. $20-$90. Through Sunday.

MUSIC/FUNDRAISER: Food for Thought and All That Jazz @ Schenectady County Community College, Schenectady. An incredible evening of delectable food and beautiful jazz all to benefit the students as the College strives to launch new academic and career programs 5:45pm.

COMEDY: Randy & Mr. Lahey @ Upstate Concert Hall, Clifton Park. Live onstage – characters from the hit program, “Trailer Park Boys.” 8pm. $30.

FILM: Youth FX Showcase @ Landmark Spectrum 8 Theatres, Albany. A one-night-only encore screening of 10 short films from Albany’s award-winning Youth FX program. 7pm. $10; $8 students.

OPEN MIC: Club Helsinki Open Mic Night @ Club Helsinki, Hudson. Hosted by Cameron & Ryder. 6pm sign-up; 7pm show. FREE.

PERFORMANCE/READING: Nitty Gritty Poetry Slam @ the Low Beat, Albany. 7pm sign-up; 7:30 open mic; 8pm slam. $3 before 7:30pm; $5 thereafter.

THEATER ON SCREEN: “Amadeus” @ Landmark Spectrum 8 Theatres, Albany. Lucian Msamati plays Salieri in Peter Shaffer’s iconic play, recorded live earlier this year by the National Theatre. 7pm. $15.

FILM: “Cocoon” @ Cohoes Music Hall, Cohoes. Ron Howard’s 1985 film about a group of senior citizens who are imbued with youthful energy after a dip in a swimming pool. 1pm. $5.
