ArtBeat: What To See


Opening:

Seegers @ Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, New Paltz. A multimedia project inspired by the lives and work of Pete Seeger and Ruth Crawford Seeger, combining live music performance with video projection, poetry and electronic sound. New works by Hudson Valley composers Gabriel Lubell, Nathan Hall and Bob Lukomski will respond to the Seegers’ own music; newly created video projects by Gabriel Chalfin-Piney, Annelli Goeller and John Owens and excerpts from Joseph Bertolozzi’s Bridge Music (created using the sounds of the Mid-Hudson Bridge) recreate the Hudson Valley milieu which inspired and influenced the Seegers’ work throughout their lives. Tickets are available at the door for a suggested donation of $10. Friday, April 21, 6-8pm.

Rope Dance (January 28-March 19), an interactive experience created by legendary movement artist Anna Halprin, with Antoni and Petronio; On the Table (April 6-April 30) in which the gallery is at once a set and a dinning room, featuring a tablecloth woven out of 200 neckties; and Honey Baby (May 13-July 16), an immersive experience created by Antoni and Petronio in which the spectator reclines on the horizontal plane to view the video above, confounding our notion of the body’s relation to gravity. An Inner World: Seventeenth-Century Dutch Genre Painting @ The Clark Art Institute, Williamstown. This exhibition explores the work of Gerrit Dou and his contemporaries by considering tradition and innovation in the representation of figures in interior spaces, individuals in moments of contemplation or quiet exchange, and the enduring taste among collectors for works created by fijnschilders, or fine painters. Also on display: Looking North and South: European Prints and Drawings, 1500-1650, an examination of how artists responded to the work of their contemporaries in different regions of early modern Europe.
