LIVE: David Weiss & Point of Departure @ The Falcon, 4/2/17

Review and photographs by Rudy Lu
Jazz-rock fusion is still alive and well. And the proof was in the recent performance by David Weiss & Point of Departure, as they celebrated the release of their new album, Wake Up Call, at The Falcon in Marlboro.
Their concert brought back memories of the late ’60s/early ’70s Miles Davis electric band. The excitement of the electrifying duels between the keyboards of Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett was recreated by guitar virtuosos Ben Eunson and Andrew Renfroe. Bassist Matt Clohesy and drummer Kush Abadey kept the rhythms pumping, as Kush’s thundering drums propelled the swirling music to ever greater heights.
The horn section was fronted by bandleader David Weiss on trumpet with Lawrence Clark on tenor saxophone. Weiss, like Miles, frequently sat back and let the band create his vision with their own individual expression.
This was a night of intense challenging music that defied categorization.
Singer Maiko Hata and the New York School of Music jazz band Funk Shui were the openers.
