Ben Perowsky is a drummer who crosses many genres, moving seamlessly through the worlds of jazz, experimental music and pop. Among the list of his credits are playing with Rickie Lee Jones, John Cale, Roy Ayers, John Zorn, Mike Stern, the Lounge Lizards, John Scofield, Lou Reed, Steven Bernstein and Walter Becker, as well as drumming in Redcred with John Medeski and Chris Speed and the Moodswing Orchestra.

During the month of July, he is taking the stage at The Falcon in Marlboro on Monday evenings for a residency titled “3 Is the Magic Number,” each week jamming with two different musicians.

The opening Monday night featured forward-thinking trumpeter Steve Bernstein and keyboard magician John Medeski. The three musicians had previously played together at the 2014 Woodstock Jazz Festival.

The trio explored its way through a series of varied original compositions, unrehearsed yet telepathic in nature. They ended their performance with a version of Jimi Hendrix’s “Fire” followed by the jazz standard “Softly as in a Morning Sunrise.” Playing these two compositions back to back says something onto itself…

I am sure the upcoming performances in the residency will be just as adventurous. The series continues as follows:

July 17: Cyro Baptista (percussion) and Billy Martin (percussion)
July 24: Matt Munisteri (guitar) and Danton Boller (bass)
July 31: Jamie Saft (keyboards) and Brad Jones (bass)
