From child prodigy to one of the jazz world’s most respected drummers, Terri Lyne Carrington has done it all.

She started her professional career at 10 years old, being the youngest person to receive a union card in Boston. At the age of 11 she received a full scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music. When she was 12 years old she was profiled on PBS-TV.

She has played with Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Clark Terry, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Joe Sample, Al Jarreau, Yellowjackets and many others. On late night television, she was the house drummer for “The Arsenio Hall Show,” as well as Quincy Jones’ “Vibe,” hosted by Sinbad. She collaborated with Peabo Bryson on “Always Reach for Your Dreams,” a song commissioned for the 1996 Olympic Games.

She’s a three-time Grammy Award winner, and Carrington’s 2013 album, Money Jungle: Provocative in Blue – featuring covers of songs from the 1962 Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus and Max Roach album, Money Jungle – won her the 2013 Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Album, making her the first female artist to ever win in that category.

At 8pm on Tuesday (June 26), Carrington leads her quartet into Skidmore College’s Zankel Music Center in Saratoga Springs to kick off the Skidmore Jazz Institute Concert Series. Tickets are $8; seniors $5; students & children FREE.
