1/17/19: Today’s Top Tips: Thursday

MUSIC: The Jayhawks @ The Egg, Albany. The Heartland Americana pioneers soar into Greater Nippertown in support of their latest album, Back Roads and Abandoned Motels, featuring Jayhawks versions of songs that co-founding member Gary Louris had previously written with other artists plus new compositions. Folk Uke – featuring Cathy Guthrie and Amy Nelson – will open the show. 7:30pm. $39.50.

MUSIC: James Maddock @ Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs. The entertaining fixture on the folk and Americana scene emigrated from England to NYC in the early 2000s. He has swept up regional Best Of awards and placed numerous songs in major network TV shows. His new album, If It Ain’t Fixed, Don’t Break It, honors the pioneers of popular music, from the two Louies (Armstrong and Jordan), to Chuck Berry, with a side trip to the land of Townes Van Zandt. 7pm. $27.

MUSIC: The Phil Allen Concert Jazz Band @ Renaissance Restaurant at the Hall, Schenectady. The big band finds a new home for their monthly concerts. 7pm.

MUSIC: Super Dark Thursday @ River Street Pub, Troy. Featuring Pocket Vinyl, The Wait and Joan Kelsey’s Silver Lining. 9:30pm. FREE.
