2/27/19: Today’s Top Tips: Wednesday

MUSIC: Rachael & Vilray @ Club Helsinki, Hudson. The duo performs the same sort of vintage, mid-20th century jazzy pop familiar to fans of Rachael Price’s jazzy, soulful pop outfit Lake Street Dive. Their duo grew from a shared reverence for the pop music of the 1930s and ’40s. With Canadian singer-songwriter Taylor Ashton. 8pm. $25.

MUSIC: Miche Fambro @ the Cock ‘n Bull, Galway. Super guitarist/vocalist blends Philly soul and urban folk. 7:30pm. $10.

MUSIC: Hamell on Trial @ the Low Beat, Albany. The anti-folk veteran wraps up his February residency. 7pm.

MUSIC: August Burns Red @ Upstate Concert Hall, Clifton Park. With Miss May I, Fit for a King and Crystal Lake. 8pm. $25.

THEATER: Charlie & the Chocolate Factory @ Proctors, Schenectady. Yes, it’s the story of Willy Wonka, world famous inventor of the Everlasting Gobstopper, who has just made an astonishing announcement. His marvelous — and mysterious — factory is opening its gates…to a lucky few, and that includes young Charlie Bucket, whose life definitely needs sweetening. 7:30pm. Through Sunday.

FILM: “Milford Graves Full Mantis” @ Skidmore College’s Tang Museum, Saratoga Springs. Filmmaker Jake Meginsky’s portrait of renowned percussionist Milford Graves explores the musician’s kaleidoscopic creativity and relentless curiosity. He has performed internationally since 1964, both as a soloist and in ensembles with such legends as Albert Ayler, Giuseppi Logan and Sonny Sharrock. He is a founding pioneer of avant-garde jazz, and he remains one of the most influential living figures in the evolution of the form. Following the screening there will be a discussion between Meginsky and Carl Landa, the Musical Director of the Skidmore College Dance Department. Both Meginsky and Landa are Graves’s former students. 6pm. FREE.

MUSIC: The Deadbeats @ the Low Beat, Albany. If it’s Wednesday, it must be The Deadbeats… 10pm.

OPEN MIC/JAM SESSION: Saratoga Acoustic Blues Society Open Mic & Jam @ Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs, 7pm sign-up; 7:30pm music. $5; students FREE.
