LIVE: Weezer @ the Times Union Center, 3/14/19
Review and photographs by Andrzej Pilarczyk
The Times Union Center in Albany hosted the double bill of Weezer and Pixies earlier this month with Basement added to the bill as the opener. The arena was full of fans, and as always you can tell who was a fan of which band or the other because of the t-shirts from previous (and the current) tours worn by many that night.
The Pixies have been around for 32 years and that night blasted their influential punk stylings into the audience. The music was first rate, and the four-piece band was tight playing back catalog (Surfer Rosa, etc.), as well as songs from their newest release, All I Think About Now.
Weezer on the other hand has only been around since 1992, but they have sold over 21 million albums worldwide. Their set featured many of their hit singles dating back to the Blue Album and Pinkerton, while adding many new songs from their most recent recordings including the all-covers album (Toto’s “Africa,” The Turtles’ “Happy Together,” etc.) and the all-originals Black Album.
Rivers Cuomo and his bandmates know how to jam and rock out. Many of their well-crafted songs fall into the pop-rock and hard rock categories, but all are good for a band that still has an indie freshness intact. It’s nice to know that Weezer has fared far better as a unit than many of their 1990s contemporaries. By staying around and collaborating together they still having something to say, attracting both older and younger fans to their shows.
