Jazz for Young People: SPAC & Double H Ranch Program

Saratoga Performing Arts Center announced that it has partnered with Double H Ranch to bring “Jazz for Young People: What Is Jazz?” This program brings Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) with Grammy Award and Pulitzer Prize winner Wynton Marsalis to campers on August 14th at 3:30 pm.

What is Jazz? featuring the JLCO and hosted by Wynton Marsalis stirs up the musical melting pot that created jazz. Double H Ranch campers will be invited stomp, clap, and sing along as they learn about the art form. Jazz at Lincoln Center’s renowned Jazz for Young People (J4YP) Concerts are based on Leonard Bernstein’s legendary “Young People’s Concerts” of the 1950’s and 60’s. These hour-long narrated concerts use warmth and humor to introduce major jazz figures, key musical concepts and other jazz fundamentals.

Hosted by Wynton Marsalis, the program will feature an hour-long interactive concert and lesson with members from the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra including Victor Goines (saxophone), Chris Crenshaw (trombone), Carlos Henriquez (bass), Dan Nimmer (piano), and Jason Marsalis (drums). New for 2019, SPAC’s partnership with Double H Ranch gives children with life-threatening illnesses access to free music and dance programming. Following SPAC’s dance program with National Dance Institute at Double H Ranch this past July, this will be the Center’s first music collaboration presented at the camp.

“Bringing jazz icon Wynton Marsalis and musicians from JLCO to children who don’t have the opportunity to experience music and dance is part of our expanded mission to increase accessibility to inspiring, world-class performances,” said Elizabeth Sobol, President & CEO of Saratoga Performing Arts Center. “We are thrilled to be partnering with Double H Ranch and are grateful for the support of the Neil & Jane Golub Foundation, which makes this meaningful program possible.”

“The Double H Ranch takes great pride in providing our campers with life-changing experiences. Our partnership with SPAC is giving our campers a unique opportunity to interact with world renowned artists that will have a lasting impact on their lives. From the National Dance Institute to Wynton Marsalis & the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, the campers will be engaged in interactive activities that will never be forgotten. On behalf of our inspirational children, our entire Double H Ranch team is thrilled to be partnering with SPAC,” said Max Yurenda, CEO of Double H Ranch.

The program at Double H Ranch precedes “Marsalis Swing Symphony” with Wynton Marsalis and The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) performing side-by-side with The Philadelphia Orchestra on August 15 at SPAC. Comprising of 15 of the finest jazz soloists and ensemble players today, JLCO has been the Jazz at Lincoln Center resident orchestra since 1988. Under Music Director Wynton Marsalis, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra performs a vast repertoire, from rare historic compositions to Jazz at Lincoln Center-commissioned works, including compositions and arrangements by Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Fletcher Henderson, Thelonious Monk, Mary Lou Williams, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Goodman, Charles Mingus, and many others.
