The 18th Annual Albany Riverfront Jazz Festival @ Jennings Landing, Albany, NY, September, 7th, 2019 was a super great event held under cloudy, dark and, also, sun-filled skies!

The threat of rain was always there that day; but the series of band’s performances took your mind off that threat.

First, by the unbelievable show by our own undiscovered area gem, Charlie Apicella & Iron City, followed by the illustrious Skip Parsons Riverboat Jazz Band (their almost 50-year monthly residency recently came to a close at The Fountain on Albany’s New Scotland Avenue). But at the Riverfront Jazz Festival they soared into the musical stratosphere!

Black Tie Brass, the ‘wild card’ in the day’s mix, blew many a mind with their horn driven mix of jazz and funk. And uber bassist John Lee’s the Dizzy Gillespie All Stars, bounced and stretched the hard (and soft) bop of the legendary trumpeter’s legacy that day.

And, yes, The Bad Plus took no prisoners and jammed through a stellar repertoire of old and new material as only a contemporary and progressive super-jazz trio-group can do with a spendid brand-new pianist in the trio’s ranks. It was all so amazing and intense.

All-in-all, the day was a huge success for any music or jazz fan!
And the fireworks afterward!!!
