LIVE: Ladysmith Black Mambazo returns to Troy Music Hall 1/30/2020

The legendary a capella South African group Ladysmith Black Mambazo returned to Troy Music Hall, a perfect venue for their two set performance of singing and dancing isicathamiya Zulu music. A musical style developed by Zulu underground miners to amuse themselves while being forced to work at South African mines away from their families under dangerous and inhumane conditions.

The band is now in its 2nd generation with 3 sons of Joseph Shambala (who retired in 2014) leading the group. Their colorful clothing as well as their spectacular dancing performed in their trademark soft white shoes, sense of joy and humor.

Many songs were performed in their native Zulu language which has clicking sounds difficult to pronounce for native English speakers. Among the songs performed were the familiar “Homeless” and “Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes”. For concert goers, it was an evening of joy and uplifting music.
