LIVE: John Fedchock and Chuck Lamb @ Caffe Lena 2/11/2020

Trombonist John Fedchock was this month’s guest at Chuck Lamb’s residency at Caffe Lena. John has been on the scene for 40 years and is a bandleader in his own right known for his big band and quartet. John played behind the trio that Chuck assembled for this performance. Grahame Francis occupied the drummer’s chair as he has many times at the Caffe. Lew Scott played the bass; he had not played with Chuck for decades!

The band took the stage and opened with “ 3rd degree” a John Fedchock composition. What followed was a mixture of originals and standards including “You the Night and the Music”, “End of A Love Affair”(not the wistful Billie Holiday version but a swinging tune), “Star Eyes” (Charlie Parker) and Walkin’ (Miles Davis). Chuck’s composition “Mumbo Jumbo” was played. The ballads “Moon Alley” (Tom Harrell) and Havana (John Fedchock) rounded out the set.
