LIVE: Keith Pray Ortet opens Jazz on Jay, 7/8/2020

A welcome musical relief from the global pandemic was Thursday’s opening of the annual Jazz on Jay concert series by the Keith Pray Ortet.

Keith who has generally been associated with the alto saxophone has recently taken up with the organ and performed with his quartet of well known veteran jazz musicians of the Nippertown jazz scene: Brian Patneaude (tenor sax), Bob Halek (drums) and Mike Novokawski (guitar).

The musicians performed many compositions recently written by Pray, as he self deprecatingly pointed out, “not much else to do”.  Among the immediate standouts were “Blues for the Blues” and “Hymn for Freedom”.  Along with these were covers of Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together” and the Deep Purple heavy metal chestnut “Smoke on the Water.”

The series continues through mid-September on Thursdays from noon to 1:30, rain or shine, in front of Johnny’s at the corner of Jay and State St. Next Thursday will feature keyboardist Rob Lindquist’s band Trifecta.
