Indie Pop Star Annie Scherer Drops Single “Andy Warhol”

I was excited when I got the opportunity to sit down with up and coming indie-pop star, Annie Scherer. Annie is a senior at The College of Saint Rose in Albany, NY, studying Music Industry. With only two singles out, “Loving You’s a Cancer” and “Andy Warhol“, she has surpassed 11,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. Annie is not only a singer songwriter, she is a classically trained pianist, producer, and guitar player. She’s a force to be reckoned with and her musical chops are only getting stronger!

Tell me the story behind Andy Warhol:

It’s the excitement and the thrill that you feel when you’re beginning a relationship with someone, but also the fear in the back of your mind that it’s too good to be true. Really just questioning if you’re imagining things and if the person is feeling the same things as you.

I know you’re a fan of Andy Warhol, what does is art mean to you and why did you decide to title it after him?:

I love his art, his persona, and his association with a lot of musicians I like. I named it after I had written the song- whatever I was feeling was kind of emulating those kinds of colors and I was visualizing the beauty in his art while writing the lyrics. It was an idea, and it kind of just stuck.

What was the inspiration behind the music video?:

I had the idea while writing the song- I kept visualizing nature and flowers. I wanted to do something visually pleasing and I think I wanted people to see something while listening to it, and I wanted to make sure to visualize those specific things. I filmed all the flower scenes, and I directed my sister to film the scenes of me.

How has the quarantine affected your writing process?:

I think at first, I was having a hard time being creative. I took a mini break from things, I didn’t write for a month and I couldn’t come up with anything good. Once I started to get more comfortable with things and adjusted, I started writing more and it’s been picking up speed. Yeah, I feel more creative again!

I think that’s a common thing among musicians and artists right now, just trying to find inspiration while not being able to go anywhere and lacking the daily inspirations of life:

Yeah! I couldn’t find inspiration. It kind of struck me again as I got used to things. Also, just being so invested in politics and everything going on in the world, has been making it really hard to find inspiration like I used to.

What is next for Annie Scherer?

I’m in the process of preparing my album. I have a lot of material I want to record, so hopefully by early next year I will have an album ready. Potentially I might just have two LP’s or a very long album. I’m trying to record a condensed compilation of songs I’ve written over the past four years.
