Caffe Lena’s Update for the Week of January 25th

The Watch Parties are underway as we break from in-person activities until February 11. We’re hoping that the worst of the Covid surge will be behind us by that time. The Watch Parties give us a chance to revisit great shows from “the before times” played by artists from outside the region. This week’s hosts will be joining us from New Hampshire, the west coast of Ireland and Germany. Our spoken word shows, including this week’s Storytelling Night, will be broadcast live and safely from off-site.

Our artists, staff, and music-loving audience have formed an unbeatable team to get through this difficult time. We’re blessed and grateful for the determination, creativity, and loyalty that is keeping the music flowing.

Oh, how we’ve missed our dear friend Bill Staines during the shutdown!
We’re long overdue for a visit, so this Satuday Bill will host a Watch Party of his last show at Lena’s. Click the photo to watch Bill play Savannah on our stage in 2015.

All shows feature three cameras & premium audio.
Until it’s safe, there will be no live audience at the venue.

Tuesday, 8 PM
“Live From Caffe Lena” Radio Show
Listen on WEXT 97.7 & 106.1 FM

If you missed our recent show with Massachusetts singer-songwriter Hayley Reardon, here’s your chance to listen on the radio. Her poignant ballads were calming and touching. Fans from up and down the east coast, and several from Hayley’s temporary home in Germany, tuned in to watch together.

Tuesday, Jan 26 / 7 PM
Storytelling Night with William Clarke, Johanna Martin & Beth Novik

To keep everyone safe, our storytellers will be broadcasting from home this month. Settle in with a cup of tea or a glass of wine and watch in real time on YouTube or Facebook as some of the finest tellers in the Capital Region ignite our imaginations.

Wednesday, Jan 27 / 7 PM
Blues Night Watch Party:
Stretching The Truth & Mark Emanatian Duo

We’re dipping back into the archive to revisit a great night with Capital Region blues favorites Stretching The Truth, fronted by rollicking keyboardist Sonny Speed, and emotive singer-songwriter and bluesman Mark Emanation. Mark and Sonny will be cohosting the chatroom, so pop by and say Hi!

Thursday, Jan 28 / 7 PM
HighTime Watch Party

This is the music we’ve been missing during these long months of travel bans! HighTime from Connemara, Ireland brings youthful sparkle to their ancient traditional music. Ciarán Bolger and Séamus Ó Flatharta have been immersed in Irish culture their whole lives. They’re joined by the celebrated Michael Coult, from the Irish diaspora in Manchester, England. Phenomenal instrumental prowess, step dancing and three-part harmony-singing have won them a world-wide audience. The band will be hosting the chatroom tonight!

Saturday, Jan 30 / 8 PM
Bill Staines Watch Party

Since 1968, folksinger Bill Staines has graced the Caffe Lena stage twice a year–summer and winter. The pandemic forced the cancellation of his July visit, and now his January visit. So, we’re going to visit online! Bill, a self-proclaimed internet dinosaur, will be hosting the chat as we co-watch his February, 2020 concert. Sing along on the chorus and let Bill know he’s not forgotten!

Sunday, Jan 31 / 7 PM
Wallis Bird Watch Party

The amazing Irish singer-songwriter Wallis Bird will be hosting the chatroom from her home in Berlin as we watch live at 7 PM our time, 1 AM her time! Expect full energy on the stage and in the chat as this force of nature shares her passionate heart and beautiful music on Lena’s stage for the first time. She has toured in support of Rodrigo y Gabriella and Billy Bragg, and played 12-hour shows to raise money for charity, and still gave the enamored audience an encore.
