Caffe Lena’s Update for the Week of February 22nd
Greetings – A nice thing about watching shows from home is that you don’t need to stress when the kids get a little too into the music. Folk music thrives on the fringes of the music industry, finding its warmest welcome in a family and community setting. Without really meaning to, we find that we’ve created a family theme this week. From the father and son duo playing Rick’s Picks on Monday, to the launch of Folk Club Kids online, to a husband and wife sea chantey duo and a pair of brother and sister rockers, we’re seeing how music creates a bond of love and closeness. And when the band lives together, there’s lots of time to practice!

I hope you have a healthy, safe and harmonious week.

Ryan Martin
Throughout the pandemic we’ve continued questing for new artists to bring you, which is very challenging given current travel restrictions. We found California-born songwriter Ryan Martin hanging out in the Hudson Valley, having just released a new record he recorded at Old Soul Studio in Catskill. Full of hooks, groove and a Laurel Canyon vibe, Martin is getting great reviews for the new release.
“Perfection is damn near impossible to come by and it almost never happens. Yet somehow, someway, Ryan Martin hit that rare pocket in time and captured perfection.” —American Songwriter

Chanteys & Songs of the Sea
The craze for chanteys currently underway on TikTok left us scouring the land and seas for some real experts. We are thrilled that Joy Bennett of the Johnson Girls, a renowned maritime quintet out of NYC, and her husband Chris Koldewey accepted our invitation! Koldewey is a multi-instrumentalist with a vast repertoire of work songs, especially those sung by sailors. Joy is currently the Executive Director of Old Songs in Voorheesville, and proceeds will support the organization.
