Live: Jay Collins Northern Resistance @ The Colony in Woodstock, 05/15/2021
The Colony Beer Garden reopened for outdoor concerts on April 10th. This the venerable Colony’s outdoor venture as an answer to the Covid pandemic. Picnic tables socially distanced apart. Improved this season based upon lessons learned last year with a larger menu and full bar (order and pick up), larger stage, new sound booth and sound system.
Jay Collin’s Northern Resistance is the band that has a monthly residence here, the third Saturday evening of the month. Leader Jay Collins is a musician’s musician. His saxophone and flute notes have been heard with Levon Helm, Greg Allman, The Allman Brothers Bands, Donald Fagen, and Little Feat. He has also played on the jazz side with pianist Jackie Terrason, Latin percussionist Bobby Sanabria as well as the late pianist Andrew Hill and bassist Leroy Vinegar. That doesn’t include his frequent appearances as when he accompanies feature acts at nearby Kingston’s Jazzstock series.
The quintet’s repertoire leans toward the roots Americana, classic rock genre and includes many originals by Jay and other members of his band as including the venerable chestnut “The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys”.
The quintet is:
Jay Collins- Lead vocals, saxophone, flute, keyboard
Will Bryant-keyboards, vocals
Manuel Quintana- Drums
The next performance for this residency is June 19th. Jay Collins will be next appearing at the Falcon in Marlboro, NY where he will be producing an outdoor concert on the deck overlooking Marlboro Falls featuring The Restless Age, Midnight Ramble Horns, and the latest member of Little Feat, Scott Sharrard. The outdoor music season is alive again.
