Live (Photo Gallery): Eggy @ Putnam Place, 5/17/2021

This past Saturday, New Haven CT jam band quartet Eggy performed at Putnam Place in Saratoga Springs as the fourth in a short run of northeast performances. The Putnam show, like the band’s previous three shows in Rochester, Pembroke, and Fairfield, was socially distant and sold out inside the venue.

With this run of shows being Eggy’s first time back in front of a live audience since October 2020, they were a huge showing musically and energetically from both band and crowd, and Putnam was no exception. Eggy performed in very strong form in Saratoga, displaying a more than solid on stage chemistry and demonstrating lots of creative improvisation and risk taking on a number of their fans’ favorite select songs.

Across their four night northeastern run, Eggy debuted a number of new tunes, a few of which were offered at Putnam. One of these new ones, the Americana-tinged ballad “Broken Bluff,” featured lead guitarist Jake Brownstein sitting down at the piano next to keyboardist Dani Battat. “One Stop Shop,” meanwhile, was delivered at the height of a powerfully played second set, taking on lots of funk and jazz rock interplay between all members of the band.

Beyond the new songs, highlights of this night from Eggy was the vigorously played version of CSNY’s “Southern Cross” which ended with an instrumental jam on Led Zeppelin’s “The Ocean,” and the far extended version of Eggy original “Onitsuka Tiger” that segued into a vocal jam and that featured teases of both Pick Your Poison’s “Parseltongue” and J Geil’s “Centerfold.”

With this stellar run of shows behind them, Eggy looks ahead to a fruitful summer back in action as live music slowly makes a return to normalcy. So far the news includes an announcement to perform at this year’s Peach Music Festival. Putnam Place also continues with their own live music schedule, including upcoming shows from local Tom Petty tribute act The BrokenHearted, a show from psych-prog trio Consider The Source, and more.
