The Attic Classic: Our story begins in 1966, in Schenectady at the Vibra Sound studio and label. Local bands would pay for the use of the studio and staff to record and stamp out a 45 single, in the hopes of being discovered and signed to a larger record company. One such band of teenagers out of the Electric City was The Heathens, recording two hard driving garage rock songs, “The Other Way Around” b/w “Problems,” and releasing them in 1967 on the Vibra label.
Both were written by Michael Dellario, drummer and vocalist for the group. Dellario, following college studies in music and composition here and abroad, along with a stretch teaching electronic and computer music, became an award-winning composer in the opera, musical theater, and choral music fields. That’s pretty far out of the garage! In 1982, Michael changed his surname to Dellaira to reflect the original spelling of his family’s name.
