The Attic Classic: Two independent guitar-picking singer/songwriters fell in together during the early 2000’s. They kept running into each other at open mics, found they hit it off musically, and began a collaboration that started with many nights just hanging out, drinking and playing guitar, sharing songs. Two like-minded musical acquaintances created Palatypus, becoming a popular act in the Capital Region indie-folk scene.
Matt Durfee came to Albany from the rural Schoharie Valley, bringing his masterful finger-picking, unique tenor voice and quickly developing songwriting skills. Albany native Michael Poulopoulos found his musical talents while at college, returning to play guitar in bands and continued developing a literary songwriting style. When Palatypus became more of a solid pairing, it wasn’t so much co-writing as adding to and embellishing each other’s songs.
In 2007 they recorded and released their EP ‘Lazaretto’ with backing from some notable local musicians. The Attic Classic is the opening song, “Dandelion Wine.”
Tune in WEXT Radio at 97.7 and 106.1 FM, at 89.1’s HD2 station, via online website stream at www.wextradio.org, or by using the free app for iOS and Android devices.
Performance videos of Palatypus are harder to come by than hen’s teeth, as are ones by Matt Durfee and M.R. Poulopoulos. How about one from each? Matt’s is from his 2015 entry to the NPR Tiny Desk Contest; M.R.’s is also from 2015, produced as part of the “Campaign for Caffe Lena” video series.
