The Attic Classic: FRENCH LETTER was one of the local bands whose shows attracted all the scenesters, media and fans that could pack into whatever place they were playing to witness and be part of the event. They were also the band that other band members went out to see, sometimes even if they were playing that night.

So there are memories, but what was missing were recordings. The inspiration for a collection of studio work, demos, live shows and interviews were the passing in 2016 of musician, artist, photographer, hairdresser and iconic member of Albany’s creative underground, Buck Malen.

The Attic Classic “Secret Tears” by FRENCH LETTER comes from the 2020 collection titled ‘French Letter 1981-1992.’
Tune in WEXT Radio at 97.7 and 106.1 FM, at 89.1’s HD2 station, via online website stream at, or by using the free app for iOS and Android devices

I haven’t come across a video with French Letter performing live, but there is one with Buck Malen playing bass with Johnny Rabb & the JailHouse Rockers.
