TONY MARKELLIS: A Celebration Of Life, Caffe Lena, 09/12/2021
The Irish had it right, historically speaking, when someone passed, after the wake and funeral, they would get together and celebrate that person’s life with shared stories, remembrances, testimonials, and songs.
On Sunday, September 12, 2021, dozens of friends, musicians, and a few family members gathered at Caffe Lena in downtown Saratoga Springs to do just that about Tony Markellis.
The program was divided into two live-streamed parts: The first two hours featured musicians, friends, and his brother Greg ascending the stage and sharing recollections of driving to gigs in snowstorms, conversations, memories, childhood, and observations on everything from Tony’s great knowledge of food & restaurants from around the country to his ever curious mind with asking people he met intricate questions about what they do and how they do it. The second part of the presentation was a video on a drop down screen on the stage from musicians and friends who were far away or who could not make the event.
Tony Markellis was a world-class bassist who could fit in any type of musical group or style. He is best know as a member of Trey Anastasio Band (TAB) or Ghosts In The Forest band (among decades-long solo touring & recording projects by Phish’s front-man Trey Anastasio), a band-member in a number of jam bands including Floodwood, the early 1970s Dave Bromberg Band and many more ‘national’ groups or singer-songwriters including Michael Jerling. In the region, he is known as a collaborator of many aggregations of bands by Bob Warren and Mark Tolstrup among others.
