Super 400 Releases New Single “You Are My Light”

Editor’s Note: This was written by Lori Friday (bass, vocal, and piano) giving a little background to the song.

Life as a musical wanderer inevitably throws marbles under the feet.

There was that night in Valencia that Kenny experienced heat stroke onstage. During one hotel stay, mosquitos of mythic size entered Joe’s open window and left golf ball-sized welts over his body.

One tour manager chose to listen to the same album on the bus, at full volume, all day, every day. Cuisine can be a gamble, as well as sleeping conditions (one most memorable hotel had a mattress that looked as though it had been soaking in sludge). The opportunity to launder your stage clothes becomes a luxury.

But the rewards for a band’s efforts can be truly magical. An especially memorable tour of Spain prompted us to bottle some memories for a song. Spanish music fans wear their hearts proudly on their sleeves and many a rock and roll band has returned from a tour of the country with renewed faith in the future of live music.

On this particular adventure, we returned to several clubs that we had played the year before and noticed familiar faces. Despite our awkward attempts at a few Spanish words or phrases, the fans took us in like family and we found common ground through the language of sound and rhythm. There was one show in particular where the crowd demanded encore after encore, slamming their fists on the front of the stage and chanting. We may have played until 4 am until our legs were jelly beneath us. After the shows, we deepened our camaraderie with club owners and kind souls well into the night, in a haze of smoke and PA speakers blasting out Motorhead or Spanish rock music. All smiles, all sincere.

To be welcomed into the lives of people in a faraway land left us in a dream state after returning home to Troy NY. And always the same thought, we can’t wait to go back.

in Spain onstage it’s the 4th of July
it’s hot as hell in here
feel my blood boil over the line
I had to take a knee
smoke rings coil all around my head
man I might just be dead

we can get there if we really try
it’s what I tell myself when my kite won’t fly
but you’re my light now
you’re my one true friend
we got it right now and the time won’t bend

you are my light you are my light

like pinballs crashing in the back of the bus
and cotton in my ear
street trash talking tryin to raise a fuss
the kind I like to hear
snow white streamers coming round the bend
your honor I defend

we can get there if we really try
it’s what I tell myself when my kite won’t fly
but you’re my light now
you’re my one true friend
we got it right now and the time won’t bend

you are my light you are my light
