The Attic Classic: Of the two Eberle brothers from Mechanicville that were singers during the big band era, this Attic Classic features a song with Bob Eberly. A song by Ray Eberle, the younger of the two, will be featured in the (near) future.

Bob Eberly – who changed the spelling of his last name when he began singing professionally – was hired by the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra in 1935 after winning an amateur hour contest on Fred Allen’s radio show. Shortly after, Tommy Dorsey left to form his own group; Bob stayed on with Jimmy Dorsey’s. In the early 1940s the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra scored a string of Billboard hits featuring Eberly and Helen O’Connell.

The pair teamed up regularly on records; Eberly would have the opening chorus and then, after an instrumental break, O’Connell would take a hotter chorus.

The Attic Classic, “Tangerine,” has become a jazz standard, and is an example of that pairing. The song was a hit single in 1942 on Decca Records; the version you get to hear is from the original Decca recordings compilation titled ‘Contrasts’ which came out in 1993.

Tune in WEXT Radio at 97.7 and 106.1 FM, at 89.1’s HD2 station, via online website stream at www.wextradio.org, or by using the free app for iOS and Android devices.

Bob and Ray Eberle were inducted into The Eddies Capital Region Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2021. Here’s their introductory video…
