The Attic Classic: In the early 1980’s hard rock was fracturing. New forms such as metal, thrash, punk and other combinations were hitting the airwaves; hair bands were popular on Mtv. Other sub-genres were starting to emerge, and the Capital District reflected the changes with new bands forming to follow the quickly changing rockscape.
Among those were CZAR, a five-man hard rock / heavy metal outfit that released a single in 1982 on Schenectady’s MCE Records. “Iron Curtain” b/w “Black Sunday” hammered the doom and dread of the Cold War with a driving rhythm, classic whammy-bar guitar and screaming vocals. Following that single release, the band had a song included on the 1983 ‘American Underground’ 3-record set which was also produced by MCE.
Late in 2021 RidingEasy Records, based in San Pedro CA and well known for their Brown Acid series of rare, lost and unreleased proto-metal and stoner rock singles from the 60s and 70s, released ‘Scrap Metal: Vol. 1.’ It collects ten of the lost and unknown heavy metal tracks they’d uncovered but didn’t fit into the series aesthetic, but felt must also be heard.
Included in that set is CZAR‘s “Iron Curtain” single, appearing on the Local 518 show as a rediscovered Attic Classic.
