LIVE: Swamp Baby/The Scurves/Zombie Giuliani at No Fun 04/09/2022
Another Saturday night, another Super Dark Collective feast of local talent on stage at No Fun in Troy:
First up some enchanting psych-folktronica from Albany’s Swamp Baby with their intimate, ethereal chamber pop. With Nick Matulis on keys, guitars and vocals, Mike Hotter on guitar and vocals, Frank Moscowitz on keys and vocals, and Meg Prokorym setting aside her BattleaXXX bass for violin and vocals, the Babies captivated, “channeling dreamscapes and love opuses” from their 2021 album “Water Gods” and earlier releases. The perpetually grinning Matulis, well aware of the band’s mellow, orchestral, subtle sonic wanderings joked with the happily engaged crowd, “Don’t worry we’re almost done, there will be real music with drums soon!”

And there was, with Dan Sorenson sitting tall and rocking behind the kit, Levi Jennes keeping pace on bass and DJ Miller steering guitar and vocals, The Scurves brought their intense, hard-hitting psych-rock. The trio from Malta, NY have just released their album “Shelter In Place”, the perfect soundtrack to assertively hammer your way out of the pandemic bubble with.

With one member ill, Albany’s ferocious BattleaXXX were replaced with Troy punks Zombie Giuliani. The three-piece combo of a masked Andrew Lynn on aggressive guitar and vocals, Chris Scully on energetic bass and a propulsive Jim Shearer on drums offered ear protection to the crowd, explaining, “some people say we play too loud!” before delivering a concise set of short, smart and angry songs. Punk Rock.
