The Sanctuary to Host Filmmakers Bhawin Suchak and Ira McKinley
TROY – On May 7th, from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm, The Sanctuary for Independent Media, welcomes folks to join documentary filmmakers Bhawin Suchak and Ira McKinley as they breakdown the process of their project Outta The Muck. From idea development through production through post-production through getting it out there, they will share how they navigated the documentary process to realize their vision. The Be The Media! workshop will include the filmmakers listening to participants’s documentary ideas and sharing strategies for realizing one’s own documentary dreams. After the Be The Media! workshop, those in attendance are welcome to join an in-person film screening of Outta The Muck, which will run from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
In Outta the Muck, family, football and history come to life in an intimate portrait of the Dean family, longtime residents of the historic town of Pahokee, Florida. Taking a journey back home to the land of sugarcane, filmmaker Ira McKinley reconnects with his niece Bridget and nephew Alvin to explore their shared family history that spans seven generations. Told through stories that transcend space and time, Outta The Muck presents an intimate portrait of a community that resists despair with love, remaining fiercely self-determined, while forging its own unique narrative of Black achievement.
Please note that for everyone’s safety, the venue is limiting attendance and following Covid protocols that include requirements that all attendees show proof of vaccination or a recent test for entry, and wear a mask. Ticket holders will be notified if the protocols change.
