Playhouse Stage Company Announces its 35th Season

While Playhouse Stage Company is soon to open its 34th Summer Season of productions at Albany’s Park Playhouse with HEAD OVER HEELS in July and THE WEDDING SINGER in August, the company is already looking ahead to its milestone 35th Season in 2022-2023. The company, known for free summer musicals in Albany and now headquartered at the Cohoes Music Hall, released a lineup of eight shows for its 35th Season, along with two plays produced by partner production company Creative License, which will be available as part of Playhouse Stage Co. subscriptions.

The lineup includes:

ASSASSINS by Stephen Sondheim & John Weidman – October 13-30, 2022 at Cohoes Music Hall: Assassins combines the late Sondheim’s signature blend of stunning lyrics and beautiful music with a panoramic look at our nation’s history, gun culture and obsession with celebrity. PSC Producing ArtisticDirector Owen Smith, who helmed the company’s 2019 production of Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd, will direct this dark, funny and fascinating musical in which nine would-be Presidential assassins inspire each other to acts in the name of another national anthem.


DISNEY’S FROZEN JR. by Robert Lopez & Kristin Anderson-Lopez – December 15-23, 2022 at Cohoes Music Hall: A story of love and acceptance between sisters, Frozen JR. brings the journey ofPrincesses Anna and Elsa to life on stage for fans to enjoy in an all-new way. PSC Director ofEducation AshleySimone Kirchner will lead the students of Playhouse Stage Academy in this family favorite for the holidays.


[TITLE OF SHOW] by Hunter Bell and Jeff Bowen – January 26 – February 12, 2023 at Cohoes Music Hall: Longtime PSC Director Michael LoPorto will lead a four-person professional cast through this delightfully meta sendup of musical theatre about a pair of writers who learn about an upcoming theatre festival at the last minute without an idea for a show, leading them to writing about… what to write about.

THE LIGHTNING THIEF: THE PERCY JACKSON MUSICAL by Joe Tracz and Rob Rokicki – April 13-23, 2023 at Cohoes Music Hall. Based on the popular novel, this story of the half-blood son of a Greek God searching for Zeus’ missing lightning bolt to fulfill an unwanted destiny features a bold rock score. PSC Managing Director Chuck Kraus will direct the advanced teen students of Playhouse StageAcademy in this exciting new show.


PINKALICIOUS THE MUSICAL by Victoria and Elizabeth Kahn– May 3-14, 2023 at Cohoes Music Hall: Back by popular demand, this tuneful musical adaptation of Victoria & Elizabeth Kahn’s children’s book series will be presented with daytime matinees for scholastic field trips and public performances for general audiences.

SOMETHING ROTTEN by Casey & Wayne Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell – June 29 – July 22 at Albany’s Park Playhouse: This raucous Renaissance comedy, in the mold of the Playhouse’s 25 the Season production of Monty Python’s Spamalot, is a side-splitting way to officially celebrate our 35th Summer in Washington Park. The Bottom brothers set out to write a play to top their rival, William Shakespeare, only to be told by a soothsayer that the future of theatre involves song and dance, leading them to write the first musical.

THE SECRET GARDEN by Marsha Norman & Lucy Simon – August 3-19, 2023 at Albany’s Park Playhouse: The classic tale of loss, hope and perseverance will delight young and old alike in Washington Park next August. Playhouse Stage Academy’s advanced teen students will bring this enchanting musical to life, telling the tale of a special little girl who finds a hidden, magical garden on her embittered Uncle’s manor.


JOSEPH & THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT by Andrew Lloyd Weber & Tim Rice –August 23-26 at Cohoes Music Hall: Weber & Rice’s popular rock opera about Joseph, his brothers and his coat of many colors features songs in styles as diverse as country-western, calypso and 50’s classic rock. The young, talented students of Playhouse Stage Academy will close out our 35th Season with this classic family favorite.

Subscriptions for the season will go on sale June 15. Patrons may choose between a full season subscription, which includes all ten musicals and plays produced by Playhouse Stage and Creative License for just $250, or a “Pick Any Five” package, which allows patrons to build a package of their choosing for $140. Single tickets to individual productions will go on sale September 1, 2022.
