Reggae Masters Steel Pulse to Launch 2022 Music Haven Concert Series
In case you missed it…the Music Haven Concert Series returns tonight with Steel Pulse and Aurelio!
SCHENECTADY – This summer, the Music Haven Concert Series re-enters the fray of live music at full-strength, starting their Summer Concert Series off with British-bred reggae royalty, Steel Pulse on Sunday, July 10th. A British band touting its mastery of reggae, the series will start with a bang that welcomes its audiences to the sounds of Jamaica! Critically hailed Honduran-born Garifuna artist Aurelio opens the first concert. Presenting a wide-ranging, free, family-friendly slate in Schenectady’s gorgeous Central Park, the series promises its faithful audience, as always, to “travel the world one concert at a time.”
“This year feels really special,” says Producing Artistic Director Mona Golub, who, after steering multiple improvements to the Agnes McDonald Music Haven Stage during the series’ 30th Anniversary Season, was forced to hit pause for 2020 and mount a shortened 2021 calendar. “I’m so grateful to be able to return to the heart of the park and share music and culture with neighbors and friends, again.”
Steel Pulse, under the pioneering leadership of Birmingham, England’s David Hinds, have been bringing the riddim forward for nearly five decades, establishing and defining a unique Transatlantic reggae pulse for generations of ardent listeners and gyrating dancers—true believers and neophytes alike, on stage, on wax and, more recently, on successive digital platforms.
Always socially aware, Hinds, on the group’s recent Mass Manipulation, tackles ills like human trafficking and police brutality while urging fans to “Rize Up” in a spirit of “Higher Love” across “Nations of the World.”
Aurelio’s music centers on an eclectic blend that resulted from West African slaves being stranded across the sea in the West Indies. Of his most recent album, Darandi, Allmusic said “the greatest living Garifuna singer-songwriter, has a powerful, velvety voice and infectious energy, but there is more fueling his inner flame than passion for music: He is trying to preserve his culture and language.”
The event, held rain or shine, will begin at 7:00 pm.
A variety of food and beverages will be available for purchase at all Music Haven shows, beginning at 6:00 pm on Sunday nights and throughout festivals and special events.
Michele’s Charcoal Pit and Ben & Jerry’s return to Music Haven for all concerts and events in 2022. And, as has become tradition, international offerings reflecting locales from which the music comes will be sold at the concession stand—including island specialties Jerk Chicken with rice and pigeon peas, Virgin Piña Coladas and Iced Coconut Lattes for Steel Pulse.
Wine and local craft beverages from Wolf Hollow Brewing Company, Frog Alley Brewing Co. and Nine Pin Cider are available throughout the season.
