Live: Music by McIntosh @ Jazz on Jay, 06/30/2022
A beautiful Thursday early summer afternoon. A nice breeze, low humidity. Jazz on Jay 2022 was again outside (We are batting .500 so far).
This week’s artists are Music by McIntosh, a trio of musicians laying down a very smooth relaxing groove to help settle everyone to a mellow tone.
To help us all not quite forget what we have gone through, especially in the last few weeks, leader and guitarist John McIntosh started with a moment of silence for respect.
The trio launched into a 90-minute set of smooth jazz, light r&b, and funk perfect for a lunch hour break.
The tone was set by Sade’s “Smooth Operator”, into the Spinners’ “I’ll Be Around” medley. Other 70’s old school standards of that era included George Benson’s “Breezin” and “Masquerade”, The Temptations’ “Just My Imagination”, Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine”, Grover Washington’s “Mr. Magic”, and Maze’s “Joy and Pain”.
Guitarist John McIntosh played a melodic guitar and set the tone for the band. Bass player Carl West laid down a solid beat always in the pocket – equally adept at slap and standard bass guitar. Keyboard player Azzaam Hameed laid down his usual melodic grooves, filling in with tasteful solos when called for.
Next Thursday’s artists are Keith Pray’s Ortet at noon.
