Enigmatic Blues Musician, Sunny War, to Deliver Captivating Show at Caffe Lena, March 4th

SARATOGA SPRINGS – Sunny War is coming to the historic Caffe Lena stage on March 4th. An enigmatic performer and blues artist, War is currently on tour in support of her latest release, Anarchist Gospel.

Sunny War is more than just an artist; she is a force of nature. What exactly is her style? Blues or punk? Yes, she may be part John Lee Hooker with a shot of Bad Brains, but even this description falls short. The only way to really know Sunny is to immerse oneself in the music. And the music draws on a range of ideas and styles, as though she’s marshaling all her forces to get her ideas across ecstatic gospel, dusty country blues, thoughtful folk, rip-roaring rock ’n roll, and even avant-garde studio experiments. She melds them together into a powerful statement of survival, revealing a probing songwriter who indulges no comforting platitudes and a highly innovative guitarist who deploys spidery riffs throughout every song.

… her right thumb plunks the bass part while her forefinger upstrokes notes and chords, leaving the other three fingers unused. A banjo technique, it’s also used by acoustic blues guitarists. Her fingers are long and strong – Robert Johnson hands – in jarring contrast to the waif they’re attached to. The walking bass line sounds like a hammer striking piano keys in perfect meter, while the fills are dynamic flurries – like cluster bombs. I haven’t heard a young guitarist this dexterous and ass-kicking in eons.

At times a rock ’n roll rebel, and other times a stripped down, introspective blues balladeer, Sunny War sings “How would you know you had a heart/If it wasn’t broken” as if she’s Tracy Chapman’s early-days sidekick, busking in Harvard Square. One fan gushes: “Sunny War is the juice, baby!!”
