Concert Review: Tim Olsen’s Quintet @ Jazz on Jay, 07/20/2023
The weather finally cleared, so Jazz on Jay was back to its namesake on Jay Street. This week’s performance was by Tim Olsen’s quintet to an enthusiastic audience. The band performed a mix of covers and originals, providing a survey of the many styles of jazz.

The music ranged from Tim’s composition inspired by the mighty Erie Canal lock 17, titled “Lock 17”, to a Coltranesque piece called “The Way,” a big bandish romp called “Walt’s Fault,” a swinging blues tune titled “I’m Tired,” and the standard “Sunny Side of the Street,” which was sassily sung by Susan.
It was a nice way to spend a Thursday lunch hour, listening to a broad survey of music.
Next Thursday’s Jazz on Jay will feature the sounds of saxophonist Eric Ciamello’s quartet from noon to 1:30 PM. The venue will be Robb Alley.
Band:
- Tim Olsen – piano
